Quadcopter Diary #5: Drone Meetup

Today’s Post by Mark Toal

The other day I received an email inviting me to join a new Meetup.com group, Drone PDX. If you’re not familiar with Meetup.com you’re missing a great way to meet people and learn about whatever interests you have.

I had no idea what or who to expect at a Drone Meetup, but since it was at a great outdoor bar on a warm night I decided to attend. 28 Drone Geeks, as they call themselves, showed up. It was a combination of tech geeks and people who want to use quadcopters for business or creative purposes.

One person at the Meetup uses drones to assist search and rescues. These are not people who are interested in looking in your window. Quadcopters and drones are going to be a part of our lives.

I meet Dmitriy Molla from FlyWorx. Dmitriy and has brother run a business that uses high end drones to shoot video and still photos for commercial customers. The above video was shot for an architectural design firm using a Panasonic Lumix GH4.

People often use the terms drones to describe this new era of personal flying machines. Joe and I prefer the term quadcopter because it sounds more friendly and less like a military or spy vehicle.
