How I Made “Purple Hair”

For the above shot of Pamela Simpson dressed in grey and shot against a Savage Photo Grey Infinity vinyl purple.setupbackground, I used the lighting setup as shown. Camera was a Panasonic Lumix GH4 with Olympus 45mm f/1.8 lens at a 3:2 aspect ratio—my favorite—and an exposure of 1/50 sec at f/1.8 and ISO 800.

For this lighting setup a Rotolight Anova V2 is placed at camera right and bounced off the nine-foot ceiling—acting as fill. As you can see in the lighting setup photograph, the key light is a Rotolight RL48-B (part of their RL-48 Interview Kit) placed at camera left with a second (magenta filtered) RL48-B right placed behind Pamela Simpson highlighting her purple hair.
